Before studying psychology under Stephen Hayes, Kelly Wilson found himself battling addiction, lying on a bed in a detox ward wondering how to kill himself.
He struggled with his addiction for years before devoting himself to helping others overcome psychological challenges. After he got his degree, he developed the Valued Living Questionanire (VLQ) based on 10 domains important for living a valued life.
The VLQ asks a series of questions about each life domain. Which ones are important to you, and how much you have been living in accordance with them. Based on the difference between your ratings of their importance and how consistent you have been living in alignment with them, a 'discrepancy' score can be calculated.
Identifying where the discrepancies are between your values and how you're living can be an important first step in recognising where you need to change.
Kelly wilson originally identified 10 live domains. In conjunction with former Olympian and high performance coach, Toby Jenkins and our own clinical experince, we have the VLQ to cover the 12 domains we see affecting the people we work with. Our additions are highlighted in bold.
The VLQ domains include: 1. Family, 2. Marriage/couples/intimate relations, 3. Parenting, 4. Friendship, 5. Work, 6. Finances, 7. Education, 8. Recreation, 9. Spirituality, 10. Citizenship, 11. Physical self-care, and 12. Environmental issues.
You can complete the VLQ and recieve a report of your scores for free by filling in the form below:
The original 10-domain VLQ has shown good test-retest reliability.
For detailed information on scoring the VLQ see Wilson and Murrell (2004).
