The Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised Scale (ECR-R)
The Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998) is one of the most known and used attachment styles test. It measures individuals on two subscales of attachment: Avoidance and Anxiety. In general Avoidant individuals find discomfort with intimacy and seek independence, whereas Anxious individuals tend to fear rejection and abandonment.
The ECR was distilled to 36 questions and two main attachment styles from a pool of 482 items covering 60 plus attachment style concepts present in the literature at the time. The revised scale (ECR-R; Fraley, Waller, & Brennan, 2000) introduced minor changes to item wording to improve clarity.
Similar to ECR, ECR-R Items demonstrates high validity, reliability [1], and trait stability over short retest periods [2]. ECR has been shown to assess attachment styles adequately among various groups – young adolescents, older adults, LGBTQI+ individuals, psychiatric patients, etc. [3]
Norm data (percentiles) are derived from Wei et al. (2007).
